What Have We Created From Coding?

During term 2 we have learnt how to used code to create a number of different things. We have created games, stories and shapes just by using code!

Below are some examples of what we have created using our coding skills. (Click the "RUN" button to start)

Please stay tuned as we add to this list every week!

Dewey Decimal System

During term 2 we have been looking at the different sections of the library and what type of books each area holds.

-Picture Books
-Junior Fiction
-Fiction
-Non Fiction

We have looked at the system we use to categorise and order books in each of these areas. This system is called the Dewey Decimal System.

Watch the video below to learn a little bit about how the Dewey Decimal System works and who created it!

We also complete a "Kahoot" quiz on how well we know the Dewey Decimal System. Below is a link to that quiz. You will need to create a free "Kahoot" account to see it in action!

Have fun!

Stage 3: Maze: Sequence
Stage 4: Artist: Sequence
Stage 5: Getting Loopy
Stage 6: Maze: Loops
Stage 7: Artist: Loops
Stage 8: Bee: Loops
Stage 9: Relay programming
Stage 10: Bee: Debugging
Stage 11: Artist: Debugging
Stage 12: Conditionals
Stage 13: Bee: Conditionals
Stage 14: Binary Bracelets
Stage 15: The Big Event
Stage 16: Flappy
Stage 17: Play Lab: Create a Story
Stage 18: Your Digital Footprint

Here is a link to a program that lets you create basic shape animations using code. (Don't forget to click the "RUN" button to see it in action!)

We will post projects on the blog when we have completed them.

Programming - Scratch - Year 3/4

During Term 2 the year 3/4 students were given the opportunity to learn all about Computer Programming.

We discovered that Programming is not as scary as it sounds! It is a set of instructions and rules you create that allow you to control a set of objects in an environment. The program we used to do this was a web based programming tool called Scratch!

Programming allows us to express our ideas, thoughts and learning in a creative way.

The 21st century skills we used while learning all about Scratch were:
-Problem Solving
-Computational thinking
-Team work
-Development of Communication Skills
-Intrinsic Motivation
-Critical Thinking

We created a "Racing Game" by watching and completing the following tutorial!

We will be posting our completed projects in the coming weeks.

Below is a video about why we should be teaching programming in schools. Definitely worth a look!

Year 2 - Biographies of our Sister School Teachers

We recently had some of our Sister School teachers come and visit us all the way from Bandung in Indonesia. During this time we learnt a little bit about these teachers and what makes them tick! Here are the biographies we made about some of the teachers from our Sister School.

Cyber Safety At OLHC

During Term 1 the year 5 and 6 students looked at cyber-safety. We completed something called a Digital Licence which was a program created by the Alannah and Madeleine foundation. The program consists of 8 tests each with 10 questions in them. You get scored out of 100% and the passing score is 80%. Once you have passed each section you get your digital license. The 8 areas you need to pass are Digital Devices, Protecting Privacy, Searching and Researching, Creating and Sharing, Social Networking and Gaming, Communicating Safely Online, Friends and Strangers and Managing Money and Online Credits. These help you learn how to become a safer citizen on the internet. Below is a copy of the digital licence we were given once we successfully completed each section.
